Elderly man killed in Massachusetts crosswalk accident

Features such as crosswalks are used to protect pedestrians in Massachusetts and across the country. Unfortunately, they can do little to prevent a crosswalk accident when distracted drivers are in the area. Accidents still happen despite the fact that there are often many warnings about crosswalks. Police are working to determine the events leading to a recent fatal accident.

The victim, an 86-year-old man, is said to have been crossing the street when the accident happened one morning in late October. Reports indicate that he was struck by a sedan driven by a 21-year-old man as the victim attempted to cross the street in a crosswalk. While Massachusetts police say he was rushed to the hospital, he was pronounced dead soon afterward.

The accident remains under investigation. Officials with the police department say that the driver apparently attempted to brake just prior to the collision. At this time, police are working to determine whether the accident merits criminal charges.

The family of the deceased man is likely in a state of shock after learning of his unexpected death, and in the days following the fatal accident, they likely had to make decisions regarding funeral arrangements. Often, the stress of an unexpected loss is complicated by the financial implications such an event creates. For example, many families find themselves struggling with the burden of funeral and burial expenses. Because the injuries suffered in a crosswalk accident can be life-altering, many victims -- including family members in the event of a fatality -- choose to seek legal recourse by filing a lawsuit in a Massachusetts civil court. A successfully presented case could result in an award of damages, reducing at least some of the stress associated with these types of tragedies.
