Drive Safely This Winter

At times, snow conjures images of snowmen, sledding, snowball fights and snow days from school, all images and childhood memories that are associated with fun. But snow also brings images of icy roads and dangerous driving conditions. So as we enter the winter season, it is important to review safe driving tips to keep ourselves and others safe on the roads.

Safety Tips for Massachusetts Winter Driving

To avoid car accidents this winter the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) offers the following tips for winter driving:

  • Put space between your car and the car in front of you. This allows for a safe stopping distance when the roads are slippery.
  • Drive according to the conditions. Speed limits are designed for perfect driving conditions, not snow and ice.
  • Break carefully. Remember that it takes more distance and time to break when the roads are slick.
  • Bridge decks will freeze and become slippery first
  • Clear all snow and ice from the windshield, all windows, headlights and brake lights. Also remove snow from the hood and roof.
  • Four wheel drive vehicles and trucks are not better at stopping on slippery roads than other vehicles
  • Slow down and wear your seatbelt

In addition to the driving tips, MassDOT suggests drivers who regularly commute in cold and snow may want to take other precautions by putting the following items in their vehicle:

  • Ice scraper and brush
  • A small shovel
  • A bag of sand or cat litter (for tire traction when wheels are spinning)
  • Additional winter clothing, including coats, sweatshirts, hats, gloves and blankets
  • Jumper cables

Remember that winter driving is different from summer driving, prepare yourself and your car for winter, and be safe to avoid a winter car accident.

If you or a loved one has been involved in an auto accident, contact an experienced personal injury attorney to discuss your legal options.
