Three-car Massachusetts crash injures four

A northbound Massachusetts interstate highway was shut down after two separate car accidents left four people injured this past weekend.

The accidents about 90 miles west of Boston on I-91 in Longmeadow began when a vehicle struck a guardrail early Sunday morning. After that accident around 3 a.m., a second driver stopped to lend assistance -- and that's when the second accident occurred.

State Police in Springfield said a third vehicle slammed into the two stopped vehicles. All three drivers were reported injured, though the extent of their injuries was not disclosed.

A passenger in one of the vehicles was also injured, law enforcement officials said.

One person had to be extricated from a vehicle by rescue workers; all the injured were transported to Baystate Medical Center for treatment.

In an unrelated accident, 34 middle school students and a school bus driver were taken to a hospital after a three-vehicle collision this morning on Route 9 in Newton.

The bus was transporting students from Boston to Lexington around 7:30 a.m. when, police say, the bus hit the back of a vehicle stopped for a traffic light. That vehicle was, in turn, pushed ahead into the back of another stopped vehicle.

Several students complained of neck or back pain; the rest were treated for abrasions and bruises, officials said.

Lastly, police are saying a 36-year-old Lynn woman is being charged with vehicular homicide in a crash last year that killed a 20-year-old man and seriously injured his brother.

Police said they believe "driver fatigue" was a reason for the crash, noting that the woman's cellphone records indicate her phone was in near constant use in the 24 hours preceding the crash with the twin brothers.
