Motorcycle safety precautions that could reduce injuries

While most Massachusetts motorcycle riders enjoy traveling along the highways and roadways on their bikes, many also know that motorcycles are more dangerous than driving in cars. In fact, motorcycle riders are approximately 30 times more likely to die in a car accident than those who use motor vehicles as their primary mode of transportation. However, there are always certain safety precautions that riders can use to reduce the risk of serious injury or death.

One of the simplest ways a motorcyclist can reduce the risk of injury or death is to wear a helmet. Full-face helmets provide more protection for their riders and reduce noise from the wind, which can alert riders to the other vehicles around them. Additionally, it is recommended that drivers wear leather or reinforced jackets, full pants, high boots that cover the ankle and gloves. If the motorcyclist does fall off their bike, this gear can protect against road rash.

Due to the fact that riders are not well-protected if they become involved in a motorcycle crash, it is recommended that riders drive defensively. Riders should be on the lookout for distracted or fatigued motorists, avoid bad weather when possible and be on the lookout for any potential road hazards. While motorists cause most two-vehicle accidents involving a motorcycle, it is the motorcyclists who usually end up with injuries that could potentially be life threatening.

Even when motorcyclists do what they can to keep themselves safe while using Massachusetts roadways, motorcycle accidents that result in serious injuries or fatalities can still occur. If a rider was injured in a crash that was caused by a distracted or fatigued motorist, the injured rider may be eligible to seek compensation for medical bills by filing a personal injury lawsuit.
