Police arrest man after Massachusetts pedestrian accident

There are many people who enjoy the benefits of owning a pet. In addition to companionship, a dog, for example, can encourage an owner to remain active. Unfortunately, a Massachusetts woman and her dog were killed in a recent hit-and-run pedestrian accident. A man has since been charged.

The incident occurred one morning in March. Reports indicate that the 69-year-old woman and her dog were discovered in the road where they had apparently been walking. The woman had suffered a head injury and was not conscious when she was discovered. She was transported to the hospital but ultimately died from the injuries she suffered. The dog also died.

While police originally had few leads, they noticed what was apparently a suspicious pickup truck parked in a driveway near the accident scene. When they knocked on the door, the 39-year-old man who answered confessed to hitting the woman. He reportedly told police that he knew he had hit something, but said he saw a dog running from the scene and thought there was no reason to stop. The recent charges filed against him -- leaving the scene of an accident and motor vehicle homicide -- were just the latest in a long list of driving-related accusations against the man.

Unfortunately, this pedestrian accident has left a family in Massachusetts coping with the death of a beloved family member. In addition to grief, an unexpected death such as this can also leave a family in a precarious financial situation as a result of medical bills and funeral costs. Many people who have lost a loved one in such a manner have sought recourse in a civil court. In many instances, a successfully presented case resulted in an award of damages to help cope with the financial and other ramifications of such a loss.
