As more attention has turned toward the impact that humans are having on the environment, many people are choosing less damaging modes of transportation. Unfortunately, some of these options — such as walking — can place people at risk due to the lack of protective barriers if they are struck by a car. While many areas in Massachusetts take measures to protect pedestrians, such as providing crosswalks, negligent drivers continue to cause accidents that result in injuries. Unfortunately, a woman has recently suffered serious injuries in a crosswalk accident.
Police received reports of the accident at approximately 9 a.m. one morning in October. A female victim was apparently in a crosswalk at the time of the accident. She is believed to have been struck by a cargo van headed east.
Many of the details regarding the accident are unclear, including the identities of the victim and driver. However, an official for the police department says that the injuries the woman suffered are life-threatening. The Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis & Reconstruction Section is aiding in the investigation.
The family members of the injured woman are likely in shock over her injuries. If she does survive, it is likely that she will face an extremely long recovery period. Potentially unable to work, she may soon find herself swimming in debt as a result of this crosswalk accident. Many victims in Massachusetts seek to hold negligent parties accountable for their actions by filing a lawsuit with the civil court. If claims of negligence can be proved, victims — including surviving family members in the event of a fatality — could receive an award of damages to help with financial complications stemming from medical expenses and lost wages, among others.
