Massachusetts residents should not have to worry about their safety when walking in a city. However, pedestrian accidents are an unfortunate reality that often cause serious injuries for those involved. One man was recently injured in such an accident at the hands of an alleged drunk driver.
Police stated that the victim had paused at the curb and was attempting to cross the street when the incident occurred. An SUV operated by a woman struck him as he crossed. Reports say that she stopped briefly before pulling into a nearby parking lot. Officials then allege that she got out and threw two small bottles of whiskey under her vehicle.
The victim received serious injuries to his legs, arms and his head. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. Police said that the driver smelled of alcohol and when they conducted field sobriety tests on her, she reportedly failed. The entire incident was captured on video by a nearby surveillance camera. The driver has been arrested and charged with operating under the influence resulting in serious injury, failure to yield to a pedestrian in the roadway and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
When an accident like this occurs, victims may face expensive medical bills in addition to dealing with the serious injuries they have suffered. To cope with this, victims may be entitled to file personal injury claims against drivers believed to be at fault. If the claim proves negligence on that driver’s behalf, the claimant may then receive monetary damages that could help pay for any expenses related to the accident.
