Boston Police Officer Injured in Construction Vehicle Accident
Boston- Boston Police Officer Injured: A Boston Police Officer is on the mend after being hit by a construction vehicle on Thursday afternoon. The incident occurred at the busy intersection of North Washington and Thacher Streets before 1 p.m.
According to Paul McLaughlin of the Bureau of Investigative Services, the officer was on a paid detail at a construction site, assisting a construction vehicle in crossing the street when the unfortunate event occurred.
“At that point, he stopped traffic as the vehicle came through and it struck him, causing him to fall to the ground,” McLaughlin explained.
Sources from the I-Team revealed that video footage shows the truck turning through the intersection when its back door swung open, hitting the officer and knocking him down.
Emergency services treated the officer at the scene before transporting him to Massachusetts General Hospital. His injuries, though serious, are not life-threatening. Scott Hartmann, a blind individual who was approaching the intersection at the time, recounted how the officer had assisted him moments before the accident.
“He stopped me at the crosswalk when the truck was coming and then he stopped the truck,” Hartmann shared. Moments later, the officer was struck. “I’ve had some close calls being blind and stuff, but nothing ever this close before where somebody was harmed trying to help me. I feel awful about it,” he added.
Hartmann provided the police with crucial information, including the driver’s admission that he forgot to secure the latch on his truck’s back gate. He also had a heartfelt message for the injured officer: “If you are watching this, thank you for saving my life today.”
McLaughlin emphasized the risks associated with working details, particularly in high-traffic areas with large construction vehicles. “Details, depending on where they are and what they entail, can be potentially dangerous, especially in high-traffic areas, dealing with large construction trucks. So potentially, it can be very dangerous,” he noted.
Currently, the driver is cooperating with the investigation. However, it is still too early to determine whether any charges will be filed. Metro Equipment Corporation owns the construction vehicle involved, though the company has yet to provide a comment.
