The Cape teen driver faces charges after a harrowing accident in Harwich on Monday evening that left five people injured, according to local authorities. The driver, an 18-year-old from Brewster, will be held accountable following an incident that resulted in severe injuries and raised serious concerns about reckless driving.

The High-Speed Chase

The Harwich Police Department reported that Officer Jessica Ferreira was stationed on Queen Anne Road, monitoring traffic, when she noticed a BMW speeding past her around 10:45 p.m. The vehicle was traveling at approximately 70 mph and accelerating further as it disappeared from her view.

Officer Thomas Griffiths, positioned farther down the road, also noted the BMW’s dangerously high speed, estimated at around 80 mph. As Griffiths attempted to pursue the car, he lost sight of it due to its speed. Moments later, he arrived at the scene of the crash near 357 Queen Anne Road. The BMW had veered off the road, crashed into the woods, and caught fire.

Heroic Rescue Efforts

When Griffiths reached the site, he discovered four of the car’s occupants had managed to exit the vehicle, but a teenage girl remained trapped in the back seat. Acting quickly, Griffiths used his fire extinguisher to control the flames and successfully pulled the girl from the burning car.

Officer Ferreira arrived shortly thereafter and assisted in dragging the injured teens to safety. The officers provided critical first aid, including applying a tourniquet to one victim’s leg, while waiting for first responders to arrive.

The victims, aged 15 to 18, were transported to medical facilities for treatment. Three of them were taken to Cape Cod Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, while two others were airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston with life-threatening injuries.

Investigation and Charges

Police have not disclosed the names of the driver or passengers as the investigation continues. However, authorities confirmed that the teen driver will face charges in connection with the crash. The Harwich Police Chief, Kevin Considine, praised the courage of the responding officers, stating, “There is no doubt in my mind that there would be at least one fatality in this crash if it was not for the quick actions and bravery of Officer Griffiths in removing the victim from the burning car.”
