Child Victim Identified in Suspected Drunk Driving Crash
The Brockton Public Schools community is reeling from the devastating loss of a young Downey School student, who was tragically killed in a suspected drunk driving crash over the weekend. Jaylen Bush-Victorian, a promising fifth grader, was in a family vehicle that was struck by an allegedly intoxicated driver, resulting in his untimely death.
In a heartfelt social media post on Tuesday, the school district extended its condolences to Jaylen’s family. The post highlighted that Jaylen’s siblings, who are also students within the Brockton school system, and his parents sustained severe injuries in the collision. Jaylen’s mother is a dedicated paraprofessional at Barrett Russell Early Childhood Center, further deepening the connection between the family and the school community.
The district has pledged to provide support during this difficult time, stating, “We will continue to hold them close moving forward, offering every available resource to support them as they mourn this tragic loss.” To assist with the grieving process, Brockton Public Schools will have grief counselors available at Downey School on Wednesday for both students and staff.
Michael Escolas, 42, of Oxford, has been identified as the alleged driver responsible for the fatal crash. Escolas faced multiple charges including motor vehicle manslaughter, operating under the influence of alcohol (his second offense), negligent operation of a motor vehicle, a marked lanes violation, motor vehicle theft, and nine counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. On Monday, Escolas pleaded not guilty in Wrentham District Court and was held on a $100,000 cash bail. He is scheduled to return to court on September 19 for a probable cause hearing.
