Drunk Driver Crashes into Police Cruiser, Injuring Trooper on Storrow Drive
A drunk driver crashed into a State Police cruiser on Storrow Drive, injuring a trooper in the process. The incident took place on Monday evening just after 11 p.m. when a 2013 Acura SUV, traveling eastbound near Kenmore Square, rear-ended the police car. Both vehicles sustained significant damage in the crash, with the trooper suffering non-life-threatening injuries, according to State Police.
The driver of the Acura, identified as Melvin Lopez, 32, from Chelsea, was arrested at the scene. He is facing multiple charges, including operating under the influence of alcohol (OUI), possessing an open container of alcohol in his vehicle, and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.
Following the arrest, Lopez appeared in Boston Municipal Court on Tuesday, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges. Judge Stephen Key set Lopez’s bail at $500 and ordered him to refrain from alcohol. He is due back in court on February 11 for further proceedings. The driver’s legal representation has yet to respond to requests for comment.
This incident highlights the dangers of drunk driving, not only for the drivers involved but also for law enforcement officers and the general public. When such accidents occur, the victims—whether they are officers, civilians, or both—can suffer significant physical, emotional, and financial consequences.
Compensation at Stake for the Victim
In cases involving accidents like this, there are several types of compensation available to the victims, including the injured trooper in this case. Victims of drunk driving accidents may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and emotional distress. For a law enforcement officer like the injured trooper, additional compensation may also be available through workers’ compensation benefits for injuries sustained in the line of duty.
In addition to workers’ compensation, the injured party may be able to pursue a personal injury claim against the at-fault driver, in this case, Melvin Lopez. This type of claim can cover expenses such as long-term medical care, rehabilitation, and any future loss of income resulting from the injury. It is also important to note that punitive damages may be awarded in cases involving drunk driving, as the actions of the driver demonstrate gross negligence and recklessness.
