Man Fatally Hit by MBTA Bus, Residents Voice Safety Concerns
A man fatally hit by an MBTA bus on Saturday at Forest Hills has succumbed to his injuries. The victim, identified as 63-year-old Glenn Inghram, was reported by the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office. According to attorneys representing Inghram’s family, the tragic incident occurred at approximately 11:52 a.m. at the Forest Hills MBTA stop. Family members believe that Inghram was running an errand when he was struck while crossing in a designated crosswalk.
The severity of Inghram’s injuries prompted an investigation by the Boston Police Department’s Homicide Unit at the scene. Inghram was transported to the hospital, where he later died from his injuries. As of now, the Boston police have not responded to requests for comment, and the District Attorney’s office has indicated that no charges have been filed at this time.
Following the devastating incident, Inghram’s family flew in from Denver to hold a press conference, during which they expressed their intentions regarding potential legal actions. Their attorneys have indicated that they will discuss their plans in detail, focusing on the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
Safety Concerns Raised by Residents
In the aftermath of Inghram’s death, local residents have raised significant safety concerns regarding pedestrian conditions near the Forest Hills MBTA stop. Neighbors composed an open letter directed at the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, Boston Public Works, and the MBTA, urging these agencies to address the growing safety issues in the area. Despite the seriousness of their appeal, none of the organizations have immediately responded to inquiries regarding the letter.
“As residents of Forest Hills, Woodbourne, and Jamaica Plain, we have long observed the deterioration of traffic and pedestrian safety around Forest Hills Station,” the letter states. In light of this recent tragedy, the residents are demanding urgent attention to the increasingly dangerous infrastructure surrounding the station.
The letter outlines seven specific safety improvements that the residents are advocating for, the first being the installation of a full pedestrian walk signal that operates independently from bus timing at the intersection of Tower and Washington Streets. They are also requesting that the intersection of Arborway and Washington Street be equipped with similar pedestrian-only crosswalk timing to ensure the safety of those crossing.
Further suggestions from the residents include the implementation of curb extensions to enhance pedestrian safety, the addition of a new stoplight at Weld Hill Street, and the removal of overgrown landscaping around Tower Street to improve visibility for bus drivers. Additionally, they have called for the installation of flex posts to create a physical separation between pedestrians and traffic, as well as a reevaluation of bus routes that could help mitigate such accidents.
