Teen Seriously Injured in Vehicle Collision: A 13-year-old girl suffered serious injuries on Monday when she was struck by a vehicle while crossing a street in Worcester, Massachusetts. The crash occurred just before 4 p.m. near 164 Shrewsbury St., a busy and often dangerous thoroughfare.
The young girl was quickly transported to UMass Memorial Medical Center, where she is currently in the intensive care unit, fighting for her life.
“It sounded like it was two cars crashing, but it was a body flying through the air,” recounted Katie Benoit, an employee at a nearby diner who witnessed the horrific incident.
The family of the injured teen, who had been walking home from the nearby African Community School, shared their story with WCVB. Kaska Yawo, the executive director of the school, revealed that the girl and her family had emigrated from Southern Sudan, seeking a better and safer life in the United States.
“Keeping our fingers crossed that it will result positively because for one to live in a refugee camp for those years, coming over here for safety, encountering such an incident is a sad thing to know. So, we continually pray that she will come through,” Yawo expressed, highlighting the family’s challenging journey and the hopes they had for a safer future in America.
An off-duty police officer happened to be nearby and provided immediate assistance to the paramedics, police, and other first responders who arrived at the scene.
Witnesses, including WCVB’s Mary Saladna, reported that the woman driving the vehicle was visibly distraught and called for help after the accident. A gray Buick SUV, which was involved in the collision, was later towed away from the scene.
The exact circumstances of the crash remain unclear, but residents and workers have long noted that Shrewsbury Street is notorious for its high-speed traffic and associated dangers. Worcester police dedicated approximately two hours to accident reconstruction at the scene, attempting to piece together how this tragic event unfolded.
