Bystanders Rally to Rescue Pedestrian Trapped Underneath Car
On Thursday, a remarkable act of community heroism unfolded in Somerville as bystanders rallied together to lift a car off a pedestrian who had been struck near the intersection of McGrath Highway and Broadway. The pedestrian was crossing the street when he was hit by a vehicle, becoming trapped underneath it.
Construction workers from a nearby site heard the alarming crash and instinctively rushed to the scene. Among them was Good Samaritan Anderson Pacheco, who later recounted that there was no other option but to lift the car to free the trapped individual. When police officers arrived, they requested assistance from the construction crew, and together, they successfully lifted the vehicle off the pedestrian.
The victim was conscious and speaking when first responders transported him to Massachusetts General Hospital. Authorities temporarily closed the area to manage the situation and ensure safety. Police confirmed that the driver involved remained at the scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
Incidents like this highlight the critical importance of immediate action and community involvement during emergencies. However, they also bring to light the serious consequences that victims face after such traumatic events. Pedestrians involved in car accidents often suffer significant injuries that can lead to long-term health issues. Beyond the immediate medical attention, victims may require ongoing rehabilitation, and therapy, and could face permanent disabilities.
The types of compensation at stake for victims in such accidents are extensive. They may be entitled to recover medical expenses, both current and future, lost wages due to the inability to work, and compensation for pain and suffering. In some cases, there may also be grounds for punitive damages if negligence or reckless behavior contributed to the incident. Victims must understand their rights and the full extent of compensation they may be entitled to receive.
