Crashing a car in Watertown has taken on a disturbing context following a troubling incident involving a man who allegedly made threatening remarks at a Cambridge elementary school before fleeing the scene and eventually causing a serious crash in Watertown, according to officials.

The unsettling series of events began on Monday morning when the man, reportedly suffering from severe mental health issues, was spotted on the playground of the Morse School in Cambridgeport. Just before 10 a.m., the man approached an employee and allegedly asked about harming children.

According to Cambridge police, the man then followed the staff member to their car, making bizarre and nonsensical statements that further heightened concerns.

Pauline Wells, a spokesperson for the Cambridge Police Department, confirmed that the man’s behavior was indicative of a severe mental health crisis.

Sujata Wycoff, representing Cambridge Public Schools, added that the individual was “demonstrating concerning behavior near school grounds,” and that the situation was being actively investigated by law enforcement. She reassured the community by stating that at no point did the man come into contact with any students or additional staff members.

Rich O’Sullivan, the program director at the Morse School, further clarified that while the man was indeed on school property and even on the playground, he did not enter the building itself, which provided some relief amid the alarming circumstances.

After the encounter at the school, the man left the area in a vehicle. Cambridge police were able to locate him in traffic, but the man refused to stop, instead driving towards Boston. Both Boston police and Massachusetts State Police were immediately notified as the situation escalated.

The incident came to a head later that day when Watertown police discovered the vehicle involved in a rollover crash on Greenough Boulevard.

The driver believed to be the same individual from the school incident, was injured and subsequently transported to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment. Additionally, two people in a second vehicle were injured in the crash and were taken to Mount Auburn Hospital as a precaution.

In light of this traumatic event, it’s important to understand the types of compensation that may be at stake for the victims involved, particularly those injured in the secondary vehicle.

In cases like this, victims may be entitled to compensation for medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and potentially even punitive damages depending on the circumstances.
