Police Seek Driver in Hit-and-Run That Injured Grandmother
Stoneham police are actively searching for a driver in a hit-and-run crash that left a grandmother seriously injured while crossing the street on Saturday night. Authorities are now urging the public to come forward with any information to assist in the investigation.
According to reports, officers responded to the area near Spring and Pleasant Streets at approximately 8:45 p.m. after receiving an emergency call about the crash. Upon arriving at the scene, police found the woman lying on the sidewalk with severe injuries. Paramedics treated her on-site before transporting her to a nearby hospital for further medical attention.
The preliminary investigation suggests that the woman was crossing the street in a marked crosswalk with her granddaughter and their dog when a speeding vehicle struck her and immediately fled the scene. Fortunately, the grandmother was able to push her granddaughter out of harm’s way just before the crash, ensuring that both the child and the dog were uninjured.
Authorities believe the vehicle involved is a small gray or silver SUV, and they have released video footage from the scene in the hope that someone can help identify the driver. Anyone with information is urged to contact local investigators.
Chief James O’Connor praised the grandmother’s quick thinking in protecting her granddaughter. “The victim of this crash performed a heroic act by making sure her granddaughter was safe,” O’Connor said in a statement. “We are committed to finding justice for the victim and her family, and we ask that the community assists us if they can.”
Types of Compensation Available to Victims in Hit-and-Run Cases
Hit-and-run accidents like this one often leave victims and their families facing significant emotional, physical, and financial burdens. In cases where the driver responsible for the accident is identified, victims may be eligible to receive compensation for various damages. These typically include medical expenses, lost wages, pain and suffering, and long-term care costs if the injuries lead to lasting disabilities.
In situations where the driver remains unidentified, as in many hit-and-run cases, victims may still be able to pursue compensation through their insurance under uninsured motorist coverage. This type of coverage can help cover medical bills and other associated costs.
Furthermore, victims can seek compensation for emotional distress caused by the trauma of the incident. For families, the emotional toll of watching a loved one suffer from severe injuries can be substantial, making compensation for psychological damages crucial.
