According to a WBZTV report, five Massachusetts state troopers have been involved in car accidents while on the job in June and July. The most tragic accident involved Trooper Douglas Weddleton, who was killed when he was struck by drunk driver after pulling over another vehicle. These accidents highlight a disturbing yet unsurprising trend for the summer months. The National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) says that summer is one of the most dangerous times to be on the road. 1,000 Officers Added to Target Drunk Drivers

Massachusetts' drivers can expect to see more patrols on the streets this summer -- 1,000 more to be exact. After a fifth police officer was struck by a drunk driver in the past two weeks, officers got fed up and launched the Operation Lighting initiative. The federally funded program aims to take more drunk drivers off the road this summer by increasing patrols and enhancing public awareness of impaired-driving consequences.
