On behalf of posted in Pedestrian Accidents on Wednesday March 27, 2013

Boston media outlets are reporting that a former New Hampshire police officer has been accused of being in a hit-and-run car accident that injured two teenaged pedestrians. The Manchester man was fired from that city's police department after an investigation into the allegations. The 41-year-old is accused of hitting the boys, 17 and 18 years old, and fleeing as one teen lay in the road with head injuries that include bleeding on his brain. The other boy suffered a broken right elbow. He ran to a neighbor's house; the neighbor, a nurse, called 911 and went to help the other boy. Police…

Massachusetts congressman: Allow drivers to opt out of accident info

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Monday March 25, 2013

Now in his eighth term as a congressman representing much of Boston, Rep. Mike Capuano has long championed a privacy rights issue that would enable car owners to turn off the "black box" data recorder in their vehicles. If his proposal is enacted, it would mean that for drivers who disable the box, data newer vehicles record about vehicle speed, braking, etc., would not be available to investigators in the aftermath of a car accident. The event data recorder (EDR) is currently installed in approximately nine out of 10 new vehicles. The boxes collect a wealth of data on vehicle acceleration, airbag…

Living with traumatic brain injury

On behalf of posted in Traumatic Brain Injury on Friday March 22, 2013

We read recently of a man who lives every day with not only his loving wife, but also the symptoms of traumatic brain injury. Though he's far from us in Boston, his experiences are not far removed from those who suffer traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in a motor vehicle accident, a fall at work, a slip on some stairs, or elsewhere. The Alabama man suffered his TBI as he worked with Alpha Company, part of the 91st Engineer Battalion, in Iraq for a 15-month stretch over 2004 and 2005. He felt the impact of several improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in his tour. The…

On behalf of posted in Pedestrian Accidents on Wednesday March 20, 2013

Earlier this week, two men were sitting in a bar about 15 miles south of Boston when one got up around 8:30 p.m. without paying his bill and left the establishment. The 48-year-old went outside and got into his car. The other man, 38 years old, reportedly followed him outside the Weymouth pub and told him to go back in and pay his tab. The first man put his car in reverse and backed up, hitting the second man and pinning him against another vehicle in the parking lot. The pedestrian sustained severe blunt force injuries, according to police. The 48-year-old allegedly…

Massachusetts family devastated by fatal car crash

On behalf of posted in Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents on Friday March 15, 2013

They are grown men, but forever the children of the man who served for years as a popular teacher and coach at Middleborough High School about 40 miles south of Boston. As they entered a Wareham District courtroom earlier this week, the three men linked arms, tears streaming from their eyes. They were about to see the man accused of driving while intoxicated in a fatal car crash that took the life of their father. The 20-year-old defendant faces motor vehicle homicide charges. Police say he was intoxicated when he ran a red light while speeding on Route 44 this past Saturday night.…

Teen driving tragedies strike repeatedly

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Tuesday March 12, 2013

In just the past few days, readers of Boston newspapers have been seen several articles about tragic car accidents involving teen drivers. In a Sunday accident in Ohio involving a speeding SUV driven by a teen, six young people lost their lives. In a Texas crash that same day, five more teenagers died in a fiery accident when the car they were in ran a stop sign and was broadsided by an 18-wheeler. These are indescribable tragedies for the teenagers who lost their lives and for their grieving families. In both cases, it appears the tragedies stemmed from young drivers making rash, poor…

Volunteer firefighter killed in truck accident

On behalf of posted in Commercial Vehicle Accidents on Thursday March 7, 2013

He had celebrated a dozen years as a firefighter earlier in the day. But when the call came that night, he responded as a volunteer to a multiple-vehicle crash on a nearby interstate highway. As he was there helping accident victims, a tractor-trailer struck the 39-year-old father of two and killed him. Though the truck accident was far from us in Boston, it has people across the nation wishing the best for his family as they try to deal with their sudden, devastating loss. He was quickly eulogized by co-workers as a man who loved his family, life, his work as a Bloomington,…

Two tragic Massachusetts pedestrian accidents

On behalf of posted in Pedestrian Accidents on Monday March 4, 2013

Massachusetts State Police said they are investigating a recent pedestrian accident in which a 66-year-old election lawyer lost his life. The William Day Boulevard accident happened last Wednesday evening just before eight in the South Boston neighborhood. U.S. Representative Stephen F. Lynch described the man as a long-time friend who had helped him many times. The 33-year-old driver of the Range Rover that struck the attorney stayed at the scene of the accident. He apparently did not display signs that he was intoxicated. No charges have been filed. In a separate incident, a 69-year-old Worcester woman was killed in a pedestrian accident that same night as…
