Teenage car accident fatalities up sharply

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Wednesday February 27, 2013

Those who are growing up in the Boston area might not fully understand it just yet, but the teen years are one of life's most fun, carefree times. But those years can also be dangerous times, as a new report from the Governors Highway Safety Association indicates. Fatalities among teen drivers in car accidents soared 19 percent in the first half of last year, according to the report. That increase is more than double the rise in traffic deaths overall, the report states. In the first six months of 2012, 240 teen drivers ages 16 and 17 had their lives ended in…

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Monday February 25, 2013

The Boston Globe reports that a New Hampshire judge was killed in a car accident about 60 miles north of Boston this past weekend. The crash in Durham, New Hampshire, took the life of a 74-year-old New Hampshire Circuit Court judge based in Candia. The judge was driving west on Route 4 when his vehicle was hit head-on by an eastbound 2004 Chrysler that was attempting to pass another vehicle at the time. The accident was about two miles west of Madbury Road. The judge died at the scene of the crash, which happened Saturday morning just before nine. The other driver, 22 years…

Hit list: Which kinds of car accidents happen most frequently?

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Thursday February 21, 2013

An online car insurance site recently decided to figure out which kinds of car accidents happen most frequently, the Boston Globe reports. Some drivers might be surprised by the news that two-vehicle accidents comprise less than 50 percent of all collisions and crashes. The website analyzed data submitted by more than 42,000 people shopping for car insurance. The buyers input information about any prior accidents they had been in, so that they could compare insurance rates from various companies. The site's managing editor noted that when most people buy insurance, they do it to have a safety net in place when one…

Accident-reduction innovation: Pedestrian airbags

On behalf of posted in Pedestrian Accidents on Wednesday February 20, 2013

Massachusetts has a fondness for affordable family autos, according to state vehicle registration figures examined by MSN.com. Our three favorite vehicles are the Honda CR-V, the Toyota Camry and the Toyota Corolla. Perhaps one day the list will include the new Volvo V40, the first car fitted with airbags for pedestrians. The Swedish automaker always strives to be on the cutting edge of safety technology (it was first on the market with a three-point seatbelt). Introduced at the Geneva Motor Show, the 2013 model of the V40 is available in Australia, but is apparently not currently slated to be sold in…

A pair of pedestrian accidents reported

On behalf of posted in Pedestrian Accidents on Thursday February 14, 2013

In Boston, we understand that drivers are too often in a hurry and not always careful to look for pedestrians. Unfortunately, sometimes careless, hurried drivers will hit a pedestrian with the right of way. That might well be what happened in an out-of-state pedestrian accident in which a Houston, Texas, man was hit by a tractor-trailer. He survived the December collision, but sustained "severe" injuries to his head, neck, back, shoulder and other parts of the body. Earlier this month, the man filed a lawsuit against the truck driver and the company the trucker was driving the 1997 red Freightliner truck for…

Experts: Don’t always blame the weather for winter car accidents

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Wednesday February 13, 2013

No one needs to tell those of us in Boston (or anywhere else in Massachusetts) about snow. Our recent blizzard was as big and bad as blizzards can be. One of the many problems a storm of that enormity can cause: car accidents. However, experts say that in many cases, winter-weather car accidents can be avoided if people exercise common-sense driving habits. They warn that not all winter-storm car accidents and resultant injuries are the fault of the weather; sometimes the collisions are the fault of drivers who fail to slow down and drive appropriately for conditions. A look at a…

Bus company owner apologizes for crash; stands by driver

On behalf of posted in Commercial Vehicle Accidents on Tuesday February 5, 2013

The owner of a bus company whose tour bus crashed into a concrete overpass in Boston, leaving a teenager in critical condition, has apologized to the dozens injured in the collision. The owner of Philadelphia-based Calvary Coach insists, however, that the 66-year-old driver of the vehicle is "a very good driver" who is apparently not at fault for the bus accident. A 17-year-old boy in the Soldier's Field Road crash continues to battle life-threatening injuries at Boston Medical Center, according to a news report earlier today. The bus driver and bus company owner reportedly are claiming that the crash is due…

One person injured in Saturday night's Boston bus crash was still listed in critical condition yesterday, according to media reports. The tour bus had taken high school students and chaperones on a visit to Harvard University. The bus was headed home to Philadelphia when it crashed into an overpass on Soldiers Field Road at the Western Avenue Bridge at about 7:30 p.m. The driver, 66 years old, has not been charged, a State Police spokesperson said. However, an investigation into the accident continues; it could take up to six weeks to complete, an official said. At this point, there is no indication…

Dog breeds and dog bites: Massachusetts officials weigh restrictions

On behalf of posted in Premises Liability on Friday February 1, 2013

In every field of human activity, concepts and categories help to provide order and efficiency. When it comes to dogs, for example, it's clear that some breeds are more dangerous than others. To be sure, smaller dogs can bite just as well large ones. To the victim of a Massachusetts dog bite, it doesn't matter whether the bite was by a Doberman or a terrier. Either way, the injury can be serious - especially when children are involved. At the same time, however, there is no doubt that Dobermans and pit bulls tend to pose more dangers than terriers and Chihuahuas.…

Four firefighters injured in chain-reaction accident

On behalf of posted in Commercial Vehicle Accidents on Friday February 1, 2013

Far south of Boston, a volunteer firefighter was badly injured in a crash with a tractor-trailer yesterday morning, news reports indicate. The suburban Washington DC firefighter had to have his arm reattached by surgeons after sustaining severe injuries. Three other firefighters were also injured -- as were three other people -- though none as seriously. According to a TV station report, the fire crew had finished responding to a call regarding a minor traffic accident on a highway when their firetruck was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler. A Jeep was also involved in the crash; it reportedly overturned. All occupants of all vehicles…
