Tour bus driver to be charged in Boston crash that injured 33

On behalf of posted in Commercial Vehicle Accidents on Thursday April 11, 2013

Massachusetts state police announced earlier this week that a tour bus driver involved in the February accident on Soldier's Field Road that injured 33 passengers will be criminally charged. You might recall that the Pennsylvania tour bus slammed into a bridge overpass on its way home from a visit to Harvard University. The 67-year-old Philadelphia driver will face charges of driving to endanger, failing to obey a sign on a Department of Conservation and Recreation roadway, and operating a bus on a Department of Conservation and Recreation roadway. In the immediate aftermath of the accident, the driver and tour bus company owner…

Volunteer firefighter killed in truck accident

On behalf of posted in Commercial Vehicle Accidents on Thursday March 7, 2013

He had celebrated a dozen years as a firefighter earlier in the day. But when the call came that night, he responded as a volunteer to a multiple-vehicle crash on a nearby interstate highway. As he was there helping accident victims, a tractor-trailer struck the 39-year-old father of two and killed him. Though the truck accident was far from us in Boston, it has people across the nation wishing the best for his family as they try to deal with their sudden, devastating loss. He was quickly eulogized by co-workers as a man who loved his family, life, his work as a Bloomington,…

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Monday February 25, 2013

The Boston Globe reports that a New Hampshire judge was killed in a car accident about 60 miles north of Boston this past weekend. The crash in Durham, New Hampshire, took the life of a 74-year-old New Hampshire Circuit Court judge based in Candia. The judge was driving west on Route 4 when his vehicle was hit head-on by an eastbound 2004 Chrysler that was attempting to pass another vehicle at the time. The accident was about two miles west of Madbury Road. The judge died at the scene of the crash, which happened Saturday morning just before nine. The other driver, 22 years…

A pair of pedestrian accidents reported

On behalf of posted in Pedestrian Accidents on Thursday February 14, 2013

In Boston, we understand that drivers are too often in a hurry and not always careful to look for pedestrians. Unfortunately, sometimes careless, hurried drivers will hit a pedestrian with the right of way. That might well be what happened in an out-of-state pedestrian accident in which a Houston, Texas, man was hit by a tractor-trailer. He survived the December collision, but sustained "severe" injuries to his head, neck, back, shoulder and other parts of the body. Earlier this month, the man filed a lawsuit against the truck driver and the company the trucker was driving the 1997 red Freightliner truck for…

Bus company owner apologizes for crash; stands by driver

On behalf of posted in Commercial Vehicle Accidents on Tuesday February 5, 2013

The owner of a bus company whose tour bus crashed into a concrete overpass in Boston, leaving a teenager in critical condition, has apologized to the dozens injured in the collision. The owner of Philadelphia-based Calvary Coach insists, however, that the 66-year-old driver of the vehicle is "a very good driver" who is apparently not at fault for the bus accident. A 17-year-old boy in the Soldier's Field Road crash continues to battle life-threatening injuries at Boston Medical Center, according to a news report earlier today. The bus driver and bus company owner reportedly are claiming that the crash is due…

Four firefighters injured in chain-reaction accident

On behalf of posted in Commercial Vehicle Accidents on Friday February 1, 2013

Far south of Boston, a volunteer firefighter was badly injured in a crash with a tractor-trailer yesterday morning, news reports indicate. The suburban Washington DC firefighter had to have his arm reattached by surgeons after sustaining severe injuries. Three other firefighters were also injured -- as were three other people -- though none as seriously. According to a TV station report, the fire crew had finished responding to a call regarding a minor traffic accident on a highway when their firetruck was rear-ended by an 18-wheeler. A Jeep was also involved in the crash; it reportedly overturned. All occupants of all vehicles…

NHTSA: Commercial buses to be fitted with safety belts

On behalf of posted in Commercial Vehicle Accidents on Monday January 21, 2013

Remember riding the bus to camp as a kid and able to move around as you wished (at least when the driver wasn't looking or shouting at you)? How about travelling with your sports teams? Well, the days of relying on the green padded seat in front of you to protect you from any and all accidents may be over. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is proposing regulations to take effect by the end of 2013 that will include the requirement of safety belts on commercial buses. School buses operated by private entities are considered commercial vehicles, but not…

Overturned trailer dumps 94,000 pounds of trash onto roadway

On behalf of posted in Commercial Vehicle Accidents on Saturday January 12, 2013

Ever feel frustrated at seeing litter strewn across the road? How about driving along and hoping that the floating plastic bag weaving across the freeway isn't stuck to the front of your cars grill? If that much litter bothers you, you probably wanted to avoid I-93 North for a while as a recent crash left roughly 94,000 pounds of trash spilled across three lanes. On Tuesday, January 8, 2013, a truck accident involving an overturned 18-wheeler filled with trash spread the contents of the trailer across the highway. The crash was so bad that highway signs updated drivers of the delays and…

Are the MBTA Red Line platforms safe?

On behalf of posted in Commercial Vehicle Accidents on Wednesday November 28, 2012

Public transportation in Boston should be safe transportation. When a bus is boarded, one should expect that the driver has not been drinking. When a train passes through an intersection, it should do so with the safety of the train passengers as well as motorists or pedestrians near the tracks. And when a person is waiting for the train, the platform should be well it, well marked and wide enough so that commuters or other passengers can get on and off the train safely and not fall onto the tracks. And yet that is what has happened on more than…
