Experts: Don’t always blame the weather for winter car accidents

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Wednesday February 13, 2013

No one needs to tell those of us in Boston (or anywhere else in Massachusetts) about snow. Our recent blizzard was as big and bad as blizzards can be. One of the many problems a storm of that enormity can cause: car accidents. However, experts say that in many cases, winter-weather car accidents can be avoided if people exercise common-sense driving habits. They warn that not all winter-storm car accidents and resultant injuries are the fault of the weather; sometimes the collisions are the fault of drivers who fail to slow down and drive appropriately for conditions. A look at a…

On behalf of posted in Commercial Vehicle Accidents on Saturday January 12, 2013

Ever feel frustrated at seeing litter strewn across the road? How about driving along and hoping that the floating plastic bag weaving across the freeway isn't stuck to the front of your cars grill? If that much litter bothers you, you probably wanted to avoid I-93 North for a while as a recent crash left roughly 94,000 pounds of trash spilled across three lanes. On Tuesday, January 8, 2013, a truck accident involving an overturned 18-wheeler filled with trash spread the contents of the trailer across the highway. The crash was so bad that highway signs updated drivers of the delays and…

Cause of fatal accident in Lawrence not yet determined

On behalf of posted in Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents on Wednesday November 14, 2012

At 2:45 in the morning, the intersection of Saratoga and Park Streets in Lawrence would probably be fairly quiet. It is a primarily residential neighborhood, with a few small business establishments dotting the corners. It was at this corner that a fatal car accident occurred. An Acura Integra clipped a pickup truck and crashed into a utility pole. The 20-year-old driver of the Acura died at the scene of the crash and his two passengers were injured. The driver of the pickup truck stopped to inspect the damage to his truck, and then got back in his vehicle and left…

Boston area motorcycle accidents claim 1 life, injure 4

On behalf of posted in Motorcycle Accidents on Friday August 24, 2012

It is not difficult to understand how an accident involving a car and a motorcycle can result in serious injuries for the biker. There is little protection other than a helmet, which some do not wear, and leather clothing. According to the Center for Disease and Prevention Control, the highest death and injury rate for motorcyclists is among 20-29 year-olds, followed by 40-54 year-olds. Separate motorcycle accidents in the Boston area resulted in one death and four injured persons, some seriously. There is more biking season left before winter arrives in full force, so more motorcycle accidents are a very…

Haverhill chain-reaction crash causes injuries

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Friday August 17, 2012

Have you ever been driving on a freeway in Boston, when the traffic slows considerably, so you think there is an accident up ahead? You crawl along in traffic and then a short time later, the traffic simply picks up and you're moving at normal speeds again. There was no crash. There wasn't anyone changing a tire. The lanes weren't closed for construction. What you just experienced was the chain reaction that builds when people tailgate and must apply their brakes. It is called a traffic wave. The main cure to its occurrence is to leave ample car lengths between…

4 injured, 1 dies in Braintree single-car accident

On behalf of posted in Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents on Monday August 13, 2012

In Boston and elsewhere, when there are no witnesses to a single-car accident, accident reconstruction experts are sometimes used to help determine the timing and nature of the events which led to the accident. The reconstruction expert would attempt to discover the speed of the car and whether the driver took proper evasive or defensive actions. A recent single-car accident in Braintree killed the driver and injured four others. All five people were thrown from the Honda Accord, which indicates that none of them was wearing a seatbelt. The 26-year-old female driver from Framingham died after being transported to Boston…

Allegedly negligent motorcyclist injures self, 1 other

On behalf of posted in Motorcycle Accidents on Tuesday August 7, 2012

Typically when a car and a motorcycle are involved in an accident, the motorcyclist is the driver with more serious injuries, but is not the one who caused the accident. Recently on Pine Hills, just outside of Manomet, a motorcyclist lost control of his bike and was in a collision with a sedan. In this case, the motorcyclist seems to have caused the accident that resulted in serious personal injuries for the biker, and less serious injuries for the driver of the sedan. The accident reportedly took place at about 7:15 in the evening. Prior to the accident, a police…

Off duty police officer crashes into car driven by 36-year-old

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Friday July 27, 2012

In Boston we may not like to think of our local police force as misbehaving or having the same types of problems that others among us may have. However, it happens. Police officers make mistakes and do not behave as they should -- sometimes with serious consequences. Recently it was widely reported that a police officer who was allegedly driving while drunk, rammed his Toyota Tundra into a Honda Accord driven by a 36-year-old woman. The 36-year-old was seriously injured in the accident and the officer suffered minor injuries. When the officer was admitted to the hospital, his blood alcohol concentration…

Teenager on bicycle injured by motorist in Quincy

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Monday July 23, 2012

Speed limit postings on residential streets in Massachusetts can be as low 15 miles per hour in a school zone to as much as 40 miles per hour or more. Motorists are required to follow the speed limits, but they are also supposed to drive for the existing weather conditions. Drivers should also have safe distances between themselves and the car in front of them so they can stop without running into car in front. Recently, a car was traveling on a residential road at an unknown speed when the driver was unable to stop in time and instead struck…
