Boston study offers proof that bike helmets save lives

On behalf of posted in brain injury on Thursday June 6, 2013

You've probably heard the expression that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. That's especially true when it comes to avoiding traumatic brain injuries or death from a bicycle accident. While many of us grew up riding a bike without a helmet, Massachusetts and several other states now require youth 16 and under to don protective head gear when they ride. According to a recent study out of Boston Children's Hospital, such laws directly translate to fewer injuries and fatalities. The study focused on the deaths of younger teens and children, who may not be as cautious about traffic…

Truck strikes and kills Boston University student on bicycle

On behalf of posted in Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents on Friday December 7, 2012

The weight disparity between a tractor trailer truck and a bicyclist is enormous. Should an accident occur, the person on the bicycle is almost certain to suffer serious personal injuries. It was recently reported that there have been five fatal bicycle accidents in the Boston area, each of them caused by a truck, bus or trolley. Recently a Boston University graduate student became one of those statistics when he was struck by a semi truck and died as a result of his personal injuries. The accident occurred at about 8:30 in the morning in the intersection of Commonwealth Avenue and…

Bike helmets save lives, Boston promotes their usage

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Monday October 29, 2012

Cars and bicycles are sharing the roads more and more often in the Boston area. It was recently reported that there has been a 30 percent increase in bicycling during the last two years thanks to 57 miles of new bike lanes and The Hubway bike share program. According to The Hubway's Facebook page, the program was launched last year and includes a fleet of 610 bikes at 61 stations. Despite the increase in riders, the number of accidents has dropped by 25 percent. In concert with this increase in bicyclists, Boston has launched a safety campaign promoting the use…

Bicyclist seriously injured in Brockton intersection

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Thursday October 4, 2012

Belmont Street in Brockton, Massachusetts, is a straight road intersected by other smaller roads. The speed limit is 35 miles per hour. For nearly three-fourths of a mile, there is no crosswalk if one wished to cross Belmont Street. A 55-year-old man on a bicycle was attempting to cross Belmont Street near Lorraine Avenue and Linwood Street, when he was struck by an SUV traveling at an undetermined speed. The cyclist was airlifted to an area hospital with traumatic head injuries suffered in the car and bicycle accident. According to sources, the intersection is a known danger spot. In a two…

Bicyclist seriously injured by truck in Medway

On behalf of posted in Commercial Vehicle Accidents on Friday September 14, 2012

Main Street in Medway is a tree-lined two-lane road. Google maps show that there is a sidewalk on one side of the road and there appears to be a clearly marked bike lane on either side of the road. The road is straight near the portion where it intersects with a cull-de-sac called Thunder Hill Road. It was along Main Street near Thunder Hill Road at 3:38 in the afternoon that a 20-year-old bicyclist was struck by a pickup truck which may have been a commercial vehicle. The bicycle-truck accident resulted in serious personal injuries for the biker. The news…

Bicyclist struck by car in East Boxford, seriously injured

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Wednesday September 5, 2012

The view from a Google map shows us that Topsfield Road in East Boxford is a small two lane road without much in the way of shoulders. The road winds through a primarily residential area. Any bicyclist riding on this road would need to stick close to the side of the road, but would be forced to share the road with motor vehicles. Conversely, cars would be sharing the road with bicyclists. Sadly, that did not happen last week and a 54-year-old bicyclist from Ipswich was struck by a car driven by a 21-year-old man from North Andover. The bicycle…

Teenager on bicycle injured by motorist in Quincy

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Monday July 23, 2012

Speed limit postings on residential streets in Massachusetts can be as low 15 miles per hour in a school zone to as much as 40 miles per hour or more. Motorists are required to follow the speed limits, but they are also supposed to drive for the existing weather conditions. Drivers should also have safe distances between themselves and the car in front of them so they can stop without running into car in front. Recently, a car was traveling on a residential road at an unknown speed when the driver was unable to stop in time and instead struck…

Golden Hill Avenue in Haverhill, Massachusetts, as seen from satellite images, looks like a typical tree-lined road that winds its way through a suburban neighborhood. The speed limit is reported to be 30 miles per hour. Bicyclist fatally injured in hit-and-run accident

On behalf of posted in Fatal Motor Vehicle Accidents on Sunday June 17, 2012

A recent news report leaves more questions than it provides answers. Why would a bicyclist be on the road at 2:00 in the morning? Why would a car strike a bicyclist in an intersection with traffic control lights? How could someone fatally strike a bicyclist and then drive away? A 23-year-old woman from West Yarmouth is expected to be charged for a fatal hit-and-run accident. In addition to the criminal charges, she could be held liable in civil court for the wrongful death of the cyclist. News sources stated that the accident was reported at 2:00 a.m., although the time of…

Bicyclist injured after struck by truck

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Friday June 15, 2012

More and more often, in all areas of the country, bicyclists are sharing the road with cars and trucks. Massachusetts is no exception. Recently, a pickup truck and a bicyclist were involved in an accident with injuries near the intersection of Falmouth Heights and Alma, in Falmouth, Massachusetts. The 18-year-old cyclist was injured and the truck driver was not. According to news sources, the accident took place at about 7 p.m. so daylight visibility should not have been a factor. The bicyclist and the truck were both traveling in the same direction on the same side of the street, as the rules…
