Boston area motorcycle accidents claim 1 life, injure 4

It is not difficult to understand how an accident involving a car and a motorcycle can result in serious injuries for the biker. There is little protection other than a helmet, which some do not wear, and leather clothing. According to the Center for Disease and Prevention Control, the highest death and injury rate for motorcyclists is among 20-29 year-olds, followed by 40-54 year-olds.

Separate motorcycle accidents in the Boston area resulted in one death and four injured persons, some seriously. There is more biking season left before winter arrives in full force, so more motorcycle accidents are a very likely possibility.

The first motorcycle accident appears to be the motorcyclist’s fault. It took place in Jamaica Plain when a motorcycle ran into a parked ­MBTA van. The motorcyclist succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the van was also injured and was taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

The second accident involved a police officer on a motorcycle which was involved in a crash in Brookline while trying to avoid a small animal. The officer was also taken to Brigham and Women’s Hospital with injuries.

The third motorcycle accident took place in Chelsea when a biker lost control of his motorcycle on Route 1 and crashed into a minivan. The motorcyclist was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with injuries described as life threatening.

In the same area, another motorcyclist crashed his bike while southbound on Route 128 near the Dedham/Norwood ­exit. The biker was injured, but is expected to survive.

When a car is negligent by not yielding to a biker or some other error, the injured biker can sue in civil court for compensation for any personal injuries that were suffered. In this case, all four motorcycle accidents appear to be due to operator error or negligence.

In a separate note, the teenager we wrote about in our previous post this week has succumbed to his injuries.
