Motorcycle and SUV collide in Natick, biker seriously injured

There is a bumper sticker you may have seen on cars around Suffolk County. It reads: “Start Seeing Motorcycles.” The problem with riding a motorcycle, as any biker will tell you, is not the bike — it is the cars and trucks.

The wisdom of that warning was brought home recently when a motorcycle and BMW SUV collided in an intersection. As is typical with most motorcycle accidents, the biker was seriously injured and the driver and passenger in the SUV were not.

The SUV and motorcycle crash took place during rush hour in Natick. The crash took place in the intersection of Speen and West Central at about 5:45 in the early evening. The motorcyclist, an unidentified man, was taken first to a nearby Boston Scientific parking lot, and then was airlifted to Tufts Medical Center in Boston.

His injuries were described as serious, but not thought to be life-threatening. Both the motorcycle and the BMW sustained damage that was described as not extensive.

It is not unusual for a motorcycle to run into a car, pickup truck or SUV because the other vehicles, not seeing the motorcycle, put themselves in the path of the bike. In this case, the SUV may have changed lanes into the path of the bike. Because the accident occurred in an intersection, it is possible that one of the vehicles was turning at the time.

Negligence or fault may depend upon who had the right of way. The police are investigating the accident and had the road closed for several hours following the accident.

If the SUV driver was negligent, the motorcyclist could sue for his personal injuries, perhaps including pain and suffering.
