Serious brain injuries require immediate medical treatment. If such treatment is not provided, the patient's condition could rapidly deteriorate. Many patients that suffer these types of injuries are unable to consent to the procedures that doctors need to perform in emergency situations, meaning that family members are often called upon to allow the doctors to complete the necessary tasks. In some situations, doctors may feel that certain patients would benefit from medical procedures that are a part of experimental trials. More than three million Americans live with traumatic brain injuries. Here in Massachusetts, we have the lowest rate of traumatic brain injury (TBI) fatalities in the nation at 9.9 per 100,000 residents.
