Car accidents: 1 dead in Massachusetts

A multi-vehicle crash in Avon has claimed one life, local police have reported. Car accidents involving more than two vehicles can often result in multiple casualties, so this Massachusetts-based crash could have been considerably more tragic. Currently, authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, and no charges have yet been filed.

The accident report is incomplete at this time, but it has been confirmed that four vehicles were involved in the crash, which occurred around 10 a.m. the morning of March 25. It appears a 60-year-old man who was traveling westbound somehow ended up in the eastbound lane, where his vehicle struck several others. The man was pronounced dead at the scene when medical services arrived.

Four people in the other vehicles were taken to local hospitals. They have not been identified, and their individual statuses are unknown at this time. Police are still not sure what caused the older man to enter the opposing lane, but they have not ruled out driver error, negligence, recklessness or even intoxication at this time. Their investigation is ongoing.

Car accidents that occur without a clear cause must be thoroughly investigated by Massachusetts authorities in order to determine fault if criminal charges are to be filed. In this case, if the 60-year-old driver is found to have caused the crash, no charges will be filed posthumously. With that said, the injured parties are still entitled under state law to file personal injury lawsuits against the deceased driver’s estate in a civil court setting.
