What should be done following car accidents

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Wednesday February 22, 2017

One sees the car coming, but there is nothing that can be done. Suddenly, there is a loud crash. Car accidents occur every day across Massachusetts. Fortunately, many of these accidents cause only minor damage; however, there are those that do cause major damage. In either case, it is possible that legal assistance may be needed to resolve the situation.

The first thing to do following an accident is to seek medical attention, if necessary. Once this has been done, local law enforcement should be contacted, and drivers should exchange information such as name, address, phone number, insurance and license plate numbers. In addition, if witnesses are present, obtain their contact information as well. As soon as possible following the accident, the individual will want to take photographs of the accident scene plus any personal or property damage that has been sustained.

During the course of the accident investigation, the individual will want to refrain from discussing the accident with anyone other than law enforcement and/or his or her attorney. Sometimes, a simple statement can be misconstrued as an admission of fault. In addition, the individual will want to retain any items that may be used as evidence later on. This could include pieces of the vehicle that were removed during the accident.

Car accidents are a common occurrence throughout Massachusetts. While most can be quickly and easily resolved with a call to the insurance agent, some will require legal action. In this case, the driver will want to work with an experienced attorney in determining the best course of action.
