East Hampstead pedestrian seriously injured when struck by car

Central Street in East Hampstead is a two-lane road without much of a shoulder, although the shoulder is clearly marked. If a person was walking on the shoulder, and a car was driving within its lane, there is no reason why an accident should occur. The aerial view shows that the neighborhood is primarily residential.

An accident occurred on Central Street near Moulton Drive when a 20-year-old East Hampstead man was stuck by a car and seriously injured. Should the driver be deemed negligent in any way, the driver could be held liable in civil court for the personal injuries suffered by the 20-year-old pedestrian.

The pedestrian accident reportedly occurred at 5:36 in the early evening. The 20-year-old suffered a traumatic head injury in addition to arm and body injuries. He was airlifted to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston for treatment.

The sun set that day at 4:24 so it would have been dark out and the driver should have had his or her headlights on at the time of the accident. The police state that the 20-year-old man was wearing dark clothing. Even though he was wearing dark clothes, if the driver was paying attention and the man was on the shoulder, the driver should not have struck the pedestrian.

The police indicated that alcohol and speeding were not thought to be causes of the car and pedestrian accident. The driver was a 34-year-old woman from Plaistow who was questioned at the scene of the accident, which remains under investigation.
