TAUNTON, MA – One motorcyclist sustained critical, life-threatening injuries, and another died after they were hit by a driver suspected of impairment Saturday.

According to a press release from Massachusetts State Police of the Middleborough Barracks, the collision occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Route 24 South. Troopers said 35-year-old Fred Moreira of New Bedford was impaired when he crashed his 2014 Lexus Sedan into two motorcycles – a 2007 Yamaha R1 and a 2001 Yamaha V-Star 1100.

The operator of the V-Star motorcycle, an unidentified 39-year-old man from Fall River, was taken to Rhode Island Hospital for severe life-threatening injuries, while the other motorcyclist – 30-year-old Tyler Moniz, also of Fall River – was thrown from his bike and succumbed to fatal injuries.

Moreira was arrested and will face charges consisting of “vehicular homicide; operating under the influence of liquor; and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.”
