PLAINVILLE, MA – A 23-year-old man succumbed to fatal injuries after he crashed his BMW into an embankment and when the vehicle caught on fire Tuesday.

Massachusetts State Police told NBC Boston that the collision was brought on when the driver first crashed into a guardrail on I-495 and then went into the median.

The 23-year-old man, who was later identified as Sage Woodward from Pawtucket, Rhode Island, had been found in the water and officials said that the driver’s side of his car was burning. Officers were able to move him out of the embankment. One of the officers sustained hand injuries in the process and was sent to an area hospital for treatment.

Woodward was also taken to a hospital — Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro — where he was later declared dead.

No other vehicles and occupants were involved.

State Police are going over the specifics of this collision and have not provided other details at this time.
