Study finds drowsy drivers cause large number of accidents every year

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Friday April 19, 2013

For anyone who has had to commute by car in and around Boston, the hazards of driving while fatigued are probably familiar. Drowsy drivers are a serious danger on our roads. According to a new study, they are the cause of a much larger number of motor vehicle accidents across the country than was previously understood. In the past, fatigued motorists were believed to be the cause of between just two to three percent of all auto accidents in the U.S. Recently, Virginia Tech Transportation Institute conducted a study that revealed that drowsy drivers are actually responsible for more like 20 percent…

A suburban Boston man has been charged with driving under the influence after a fatal crash yesterday morning in Jaffrey, New Hampshire. Law enforcement officials say the Dedham man was driving north on Route 202 when he lost control of the vehicle. A passenger in the vehicle was killed after the car careened off the road and flipped upside down before catching fire. The driver and one passenger were pulled to safety by passing motorists. Another passenger in the car died in the violent wreck. All three occupants of the vehicle are from Dedham, according to a news report. The driver has…

Massachusetts congressman: Allow drivers to opt out of accident info

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Monday March 25, 2013

Now in his eighth term as a congressman representing much of Boston, Rep. Mike Capuano has long championed a privacy rights issue that would enable car owners to turn off the "black box" data recorder in their vehicles. If his proposal is enacted, it would mean that for drivers who disable the box, data newer vehicles record about vehicle speed, braking, etc., would not be available to investigators in the aftermath of a car accident. The event data recorder (EDR) is currently installed in approximately nine out of 10 new vehicles. The boxes collect a wealth of data on vehicle acceleration, airbag…

Living with traumatic brain injury

On behalf of posted in Traumatic Brain Injury on Friday March 22, 2013

We read recently of a man who lives every day with not only his loving wife, but also the symptoms of traumatic brain injury. Though he's far from us in Boston, his experiences are not far removed from those who suffer traumatic brain injuries (TBI) in a motor vehicle accident, a fall at work, a slip on some stairs, or elsewhere. The Alabama man suffered his TBI as he worked with Alpha Company, part of the 91st Engineer Battalion, in Iraq for a 15-month stretch over 2004 and 2005. He felt the impact of several improvised explosive devices (IEDs) in his tour. The…

Teen driving tragedies strike repeatedly

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Tuesday March 12, 2013

In just the past few days, readers of Boston newspapers have been seen several articles about tragic car accidents involving teen drivers. In a Sunday accident in Ohio involving a speeding SUV driven by a teen, six young people lost their lives. In a Texas crash that same day, five more teenagers died in a fiery accident when the car they were in ran a stop sign and was broadsided by an 18-wheeler. These are indescribable tragedies for the teenagers who lost their lives and for their grieving families. In both cases, it appears the tragedies stemmed from young drivers making rash, poor…

Teenage car accident fatalities up sharply

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Wednesday February 27, 2013

Those who are growing up in the Boston area might not fully understand it just yet, but the teen years are one of life's most fun, carefree times. But those years can also be dangerous times, as a new report from the Governors Highway Safety Association indicates. Fatalities among teen drivers in car accidents soared 19 percent in the first half of last year, according to the report. That increase is more than double the rise in traffic deaths overall, the report states. In the first six months of 2012, 240 teen drivers ages 16 and 17 had their lives ended in…

Hit list: Which kinds of car accidents happen most frequently?

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Thursday February 21, 2013

An online car insurance site recently decided to figure out which kinds of car accidents happen most frequently, the Boston Globe reports. Some drivers might be surprised by the news that two-vehicle accidents comprise less than 50 percent of all collisions and crashes. The website analyzed data submitted by more than 42,000 people shopping for car insurance. The buyers input information about any prior accidents they had been in, so that they could compare insurance rates from various companies. The site's managing editor noted that when most people buy insurance, they do it to have a safety net in place when one…

Multiple injuries in two-vehicle crash

On behalf of posted in Pedestrian Accidents on Wednesday January 30, 2013

Details are scarce about a two-vehicle crash far to the west of Suffolk County yesterday. A brief news report from Ashfield, Massachusetts, says several people were seriously injured in a two-vehicle collision there. Emergency crews from surrounding Franklin County towns responded to the Route 112 car accident early yesterday evening. Four ambulances were called to the scene where three people were trapped in a vehicle, according to the report. A State Police spokesperson said no one had died in the crash, but that there were "serious injuries." A 2006 Chevy Colorado pick-up truck and a 1995 Honda Accord collided near Sanderson Academy.…

Two buses and a car, only four minor injuries

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Friday January 25, 2013

What happens when two buses and a car are involved in a three vehicle accident? Well, if you're lucky like those involved in the incident in Rochester, Massachusetts, not much. Normally, when reporting an accident involving two buses and a car, one would expect extensive damage. However, in this instance, only four minor injuries were sustained among the 40 plus individuals involved. According to police, a teenage driver lost control of her car when driving past a school lot as school was letting out for the day. The car apparently went off the side of the road briefly and in…

Will you be laughing if “LOL” causes an accident?

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Tuesday January 15, 2013

Is any text really worth either your life or another's? While the answer should be no many still find it hard to break the habit of texting while driving. Even greater enforcement of Massachusetts law which invokes stiff penalties for distracted driving due to cell phone use can't seem to deter society's addiction to being plugged in. In 2010 Massachusetts passed a law that completely prohibits junior operators and public transportation drivers from using cell phones while driving, even if a hands-free device is available. Other drivers may be cited for distracted driving and penalized anywhere between $100 and $500.…
