Man dies a week after Bridgewater distracted driving car crash

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Monday June 17, 2013

By now, we assume that all of our readers have heard warnings against texting while driving. It is a leading cause of accidents these days and results in far too many deaths and injuries each year. Nationwide, scientists at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimate that 1,060 people are injured every day in traffic accidents in which driver distraction was a factor. Even so, sometimes it helps to have proof or a concrete example of a hazard to really understand it. A very sad story out of Bridgewater may serve the solemn purpose. On Monday, a West Bridgewater…

Death in the Afternoon in multi-vehicle Weston car crash

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Thursday June 13, 2013

Many people assume that winter is the most dangerous driving season in areas like Boston that receive snow and freezing rain. It's true, winter driving can be a challenge. However, the fact is that far more highway deaths actually occur in the summer as more motorists take to the roads and are lulled into a false sense of security by the nice weather. This fact played out in a deadly real life scenario recently on the Massachusetts Turnpike. Specifically, a crash occurred on Turnpike's eastbound ramp onto Interstate 95 North. The crash involved three cars, and took place on May 25 around…

After crash, Massachusetts bishop cited for drunk driving

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Tuesday May 7, 2013

"There, but for the grace of God, go I" is a saying that dates back hundreds of years. The time-worn phrase might well apply to the recent car accident and drunk driving charges against Bishop Robert J. McManus, head of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Worcester. The 61-year-old Massachusetts cleric was involved in a car crash this past weekend, but fortunately no one was hurt. As we all know, each year drunken driving leads to thousands of motor vehicle accidents per year, leaving behind fatalities and people with serious injuries. In 2011, more than 120 people were killed in Massachusetts crashes involving…

Three-car Massachusetts crash injures four

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Tuesday April 30, 2013

A northbound Massachusetts interstate highway was shut down after two separate car accidents left four people injured this past weekend. The accidents about 90 miles west of Boston on I-91 in Longmeadow began when a vehicle struck a guardrail early Sunday morning. After that accident around 3 a.m., a second driver stopped to lend assistance -- and that's when the second accident occurred. State Police in Springfield said a third vehicle slammed into the two stopped vehicles. All three drivers were reported injured, though the extent of their injuries was not disclosed. A passenger in one of the vehicles was also injured,…

MIT: Cellphone Use While Driving May Just Indicate Lousy Drivers

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Monday October 22, 2012

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) recently published a study about the dangers of driving while using a cellphone. Their findings raise questions about the effectiveness of criminalizing cellphone use behind the wheel. The MIT study suggests the real problem may be drivers who engage in risky driving behavior with or without using cellphones. The study does not dispute the well-established facts linking cellphone use while driving with higher accident rates. Peer-reviewed psychological studies have found that even talking on a hands-free phone while driving can impair reaction time as much as drinking can-though talking with people present in the vehicle…

The Dangers of Back-to-School Traffic

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Monday September 24, 2012

The nation just got through the first few weeks of school this fall and with it came the usual added stress on drivers and kids to stay safe. The reasons are obvious for an increase in the risk of motor vehicle accidents near schools, with or around school buses and in neighborhoods with children. Kids are little and harder to see, and more likely as pedestrians or bicyclists to forget to observe traffic safety rules or to move impulsively. Most children are killed as pedestrians in the after-school hours. Bursts of traffic are also likely to accompany resumption of classes at colleges…

NHTSA Proposes Requiring Brake Override Systems on New Cars

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Monday June 25, 2012

Spurred on by safety advocates, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recently proposed regulations that would require automobile manufacturers to require brake override systems in all new vehicles. The new proposal is partially in response to a car accident in which four people were tragically killed when an off-duty California Highway patrolman could not stop a Lexus that he borrowed. The reason: the accelerator pad got stuck because of the floor mat. This incident resulted in a recall of Toyota vehicles in 2009. The proposed regulation would require automobile manufacturers to include a brake-throttle override system in all…

Trooper Accidents Highlight a Summer Trend

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Tuesday August 24, 2010

According to a WBZTV report, five Massachusetts state troopers have been involved in car accidents while on the job in June and July. The most tragic accident involved Trooper Douglas Weddleton, who was killed when he was struck by drunk driver after pulling over another vehicle. These accidents highlight a disturbing yet unsurprising trend for the summer months. The National Highway Traffic Administration (NHTSA) says that summer is one of the most dangerous times to be on the road. August was listed as the deadliest month to be driving, with over 3,600 deaths nationwide in 2008. Beyond August, three of…

1,000 Officers Added to Target Drunk Drivers

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Friday August 20, 2010

Massachusetts' drivers can expect to see more patrols on the streets this summer -- 1,000 more to be exact. After a fifth police officer was struck by a drunk driver in the past two weeks, officers got fed up and launched the Operation Lighting initiative. The federally funded program aims to take more drunk drivers off the road this summer by increasing patrols and enhancing public awareness of impaired-driving consequences. According to state police, "half of the 87 police officers killed in the line of duty across the country were killed by vehicles or drunk driving related incidents." Based on…
