Charges filed after Massachusetts pedestrian accident kills 1

There are many heroes in life, including those who are able to overcome extreme personal struggles through hard work and perseverance. For some people on Nantucket Island, a Massachusetts woman who had overcome brain injuries after being struck by a drunk driver three years ago was a hero. Unfortunately, police say the woman was recently killed in a pedestrian accident that left one man accused of homicide.

The 58-year-old woman was reportedly training for the Boston Marathon when the accident happened. Police say that she was hit at approximately 5 p.m. one day in early February. She died from the injuries she suffered in the collision.

The driver of the vehicle believed to have struck the woman was expected to be arraigned on several charges on Feb. 2, including failing to yield to a pedestrian and vehicular homicide. The investigation into the accident is ongoing. However, police do not believe that weather or intoxication were contributing factors.

The woman was active in her community and left behind three children and three grandchildren. She was also co-owner of a local island restaurant. While the entire community will likely mourn her loss, her family may face additional financial struggles in addition to their grief as a result of the pedestrian accident. Many who have lost a family member in such a manner have chosen to seek relief from the financial ramifications of such a loss in a Massachusetts civil court. While unlikely to lessen their grief, it may help them better cope with funeral expenses, loss of wages and other financial ramifications of the tragedy.
