Elderly man killed in Massachusetts crosswalk accident

Many grandparents are known for their dedication to their grandchildren, including their desire to take as active a role in their lives as possible. One man in Massachusetts was known for his extreme dedication to his grandchildren, including taking his wheelchair on a train and bus to be able to spend time with them. Unfortunately, he was recently killed in a crosswalk accident while attempting to return home after his grandson’s birthday party.

The accident happened in early September. Reports indicate that the 72-year-old man and his wheelchair were struck by vehicle driven by a 45-year-old man. Police say that the victim was in a crosswalk at the time of the accident.

While the incident is currently under investigation, police do not suspect that drugs or alcohol was a factor in the accident. Unfortunately, there are many families of elderly people in Massachusetts who have suffered as this man’s family is now. A study conducted by Smart Growth America revealed that elderly people are at an increased risk of being harmed in a pedestrian accident. While people over the age of 65 represent only 13.4 percent of Massachusetts’s population, they are the victims of a third of pedestrian-related fatalities.
