Guilty verdict in Massachusetts accident that led to brain injury

While most people are likely aware of their mortality, it is hard to fathom that another person’s decision to drive recklessly can seriously alter the lives of many. Unfortunately, that appears to be the case after a 2013 Massachusetts car accident led to two brain injury victims. The driver said to have caused that accident was recently found guilty of negligent operation.

The accident happened in Sept. 2013. The 19-year-old driver of a sports utility vehicle was speeding when the vehicle went over a median and struck a pickup truck. The driver of the pickup truck and a passenger in the SUV both suffered serious brain injuries that have significantly impacted their lives. A passenger in the pickup truck also suffered minor injuries.

The recently convicted driver initially pleaded guilty in hopes that he would not receive jail time. However, the judge indicated that he would impose a prison  term, prompting the man to withdraw his plea. He has since been found guilty by a jury and is awaiting sentencing. He could spend up to two years behind bars.

While the Massachusetts driver’s conviction might provide some degree of comfort to the victims and the family members who provide care for them, they may still be wondering how they will cope with the expenses associated with caring for such serious injuries. Many brain injury victims require extensive, expensive medical treatment for the rest of their lives. Those injured by another’s negligence often seek recompense through litigation. If negligence can be proved, claims typically supported by a criminal conviction, victims — and in some cases, their families — may be entitled to an award of damages to help them cope with medical bills, loss of wages and other expenses.
