In driver’s education courses, instructors emphasize the importance of being a defensive driver. Unfortunately, there are some car accidents that drivers are simply unable to avoid. Police in Massachusetts are currently investigating a fatal accident that involved three cars.

The accident happened in May. Police reports indicate that a car driven by a 31-year-old woman slammed into the back of a sedan driven by a 38-year-old woman. The force of the collision pushed the second car into oncoming traffic, where it stuck a car driven by a 56-year-old man head on.

The male driver and older female driver had to be extricated from their vehicles. While the driver and a young passenger in the second vehicle suffered minor injuries, the male died as a result of his injuries. It is unclear if officials expect to file criminal charges; however, police are continuing their investigation into the tragic accident.

While police are working to find answers, the family of the deceased man are likely wondering how they will cope without their loved one. Many victims of car accidents — including loved ones in the event of a fatality — are also left facing a difficult financial future. Consequently, many people turn to the Massachusetts civil court system to seek financial relief. If can be proved that another’s negligence caused a person’s injuries or death, the court could award the victims a judgment for monetary damages to help with expenses such as lost wages, funeral expenses and medical costs, among others.
