Young Driver Charged with OUI in Fatal Sagamore Bridge Crash

In a tragic incident on the Sagamore Bridge, a young Plymouth man faces serious charges following a fatal Sagamore Bridge crash that left one person dead and two others injured. Paul Myers, a 19-year-old resident, is accused of causing the accident while driving under the influence of marijuana, according to a police report. Myers is now confronting four charges, including motor vehicle homicide while operating under the influence.

The crash, which occurred on a Friday evening, resulted in the death of 79-year-old Martha Sheldon of Plymouth. Sheldon, a passenger in one of the vehicles, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other individuals were injured in the crash, with one driver transported to the hospital with minor injuries. Remarkably, Myers escaped the crash without any injuries, as documented in records from the Falmouth District Court.

Massachusetts State Trooper Frederick Bohnenberger responded to the scene at 6:58 p.m. and found two heavily damaged vehicles blocking much of the eastbound roadway on the Sagamore Bridge. Bohnenberger’s report indicated that one of the drivers involved was conscious and alert, while the passenger, later identified as Sheldon, was tragically pronounced dead on the scene.

While conducting his investigation, Trooper Bohnenberger encountered Myers on the bridge sidewalk. Upon questioning Myers about the incident, Myers reportedly admitted to causing the accident. “I caused it,” Myers stated, according to Bohnenberger’s report. The trooper immediately detected a strong odor of burnt marijuana emanating from Myers’ Nissan and observed multiple burnt marijuana blunts on the floor of the driver’s seat.

Bohnenberger’s report further described Myers as having a lethargic demeanor. Prosecutors allege that Myers had smoked marijuana after leaving work at 5:30 p.m., approximately an hour and a half before the crash. Bohnenberger’s observations, coupled with Myers’ admission of marijuana use and the presence of marijuana in the vehicle, led to the determination that Myers was impaired by drugs at the time of the crash.

As a result, Myers was arrested for operating under the influence and is currently held on a $100,000 surety bond or $10,000 cash bail. He has been ordered to surrender his Jamaican passport, remain drug-free, reside with his sister in Plymouth, and abstain from driving.

Court records show that Myers was unable to make bail and was committed to the Barnstable County Correctional Facility, with his next court appearance scheduled for September 27th. His legal representation has declined to comment on the case.
