With the increased emphasis that has been placed on being physically active, people in Massachusetts are making attempts to be healthier. As a result, many people have turned to races such as triathlons that encourage a person to train significantly in advance. However, these events have certain risks associated with them, including the risks faced by bicyclists every time they use the roadways. Unfortunately, one man in Massachusetts was recently killed in a fatal car accident as he was completing the cycling leg of a triathlon.

The accident happened at approximately 10 a.m. one morning in mid-May. Police reports indicate that the 53-year-old victim was struck in an intersection as he rode his bicycle. He was transported to an area hospital for treatment, but, unfortunately, passed away as a result of the injuries he suffered.

The race was canceled soon after the collision, but those familiar with the race and event claim that there were multiple signs posted warning motorists of the presence of bicyclists. Police continue their investigation into the events leading up to the accident. The driver of the pickup truck that allegedly struck the man is said to be cooperating with the investigation.

When people make a commitment to improve and/or maintain their health, they likely do not think that their pursuit of such goals could ultimately be the instrument of their demise. While Massachusetts police will likely work diligently to determine the cause of the fatal car accident, the family of the deceased man may be emotionally devastated. Many people who have lost a loved one in such an unexpected and tragic manner have also found themselves struggling financially as a result of medical bills, lost wages and funeral expenses. As a result, some seek legal recourse in a civil court. A successfully presented wrongful death claim could result in an award of damages that may be able to provide partial relief for the family’s burdens.
