Motorcyclist dies after being struck by vehicle
Massachusetts State Police stated that a male motorcyclist was killed after being struck by a motorist in Scituate on June 11, two days before the motorcyclist’s birthday. According to the report, the accident took place in the 100 block of Border Street around 6:30 p.m.
It appeared that the 27-year-old local motorcyclist was struck when the motorist was attempting to leave a driveway. It was not stated if the man was transported to a nearby hospital before losing his life or if he died at the scene of the crash. The following day, authorities were still investigating the incident and it was not known if they planned to file charges against the accused driver, a 19-year-old Hanover man.
While some motorcycle accidents are caused by motorists who are driving under the influence or driving at excessive speeds, others are caused by motorists who are simply not on the lookout for motorcyclists. Because of motorcycles’ small size, many drivers may fail to notice that they are traveling in their direction. If an accident does occur, the motorcyclist is likely to suffer serious injuries that could become fatal since riders have little or no physical protection.
If a family loses a loved one to a fatal motorcycle accident caused by a negligent or inattentive driver, they may be able to recover the costs of any related damages that they sustain by filing a wrongful death claim. Such a claim may be filed by qualified family members even if no criminal charges were filed against the driver. However, the claim could be substantiated by proof that the driver who caused the crash was operating his or her vehicle in a dangerous or negligent manner.
