On behalf of posted in car accidents on Monday August 20, 2012

Hazel Road is a short road that dead ends at Route 111 just east of Hampstead. An accident at that location sent two people to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. What happened in the two-car crash has not yet been determined. One of the drivers involved in the accident was a 17-year-old from Sandown, New Hampshire. He was driving a 2000 Jeep Cherokee when he collided somehow with a 2002 Chrysler minivan driven by a woman. Her age was not reported. The car accident took place at 6:13 in the morning. Haverhill chain-reaction crash causes injuries

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Friday August 17, 2012

Have you ever been driving on a freeway in Boston, when the traffic slows considerably, so you think there is an accident up ahead? You crawl along in traffic and then a short time later, the traffic simply picks up and you're moving at normal speeds again. There was no crash. There wasn't anyone changing a tire. The lanes weren't closed for construction. What you just experienced was the chain reaction that builds when people tailgate and must apply their brakes. It is called a traffic wave. The main cure to its occurrence is to leave ample car lengths between…

Off duty police officer crashes into car driven by 36-year-old

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Friday July 27, 2012

In Boston we may not like to think of our local police force as misbehaving or having the same types of problems that others among us may have. However, it happens. Police officers make mistakes and do not behave as they should -- sometimes with serious consequences. Recently it was widely reported that a police officer who was allegedly driving while drunk, rammed his Toyota Tundra into a Honda Accord driven by a 36-year-old woman. The 36-year-old was seriously injured in the accident and the officer suffered minor injuries. When the officer was admitted to the hospital, his blood alcohol concentration…

Teenager on bicycle injured by motorist in Quincy

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Monday July 23, 2012

Speed limit postings on residential streets in Massachusetts can be as low 15 miles per hour in a school zone to as much as 40 miles per hour or more. Motorists are required to follow the speed limits, but they are also supposed to drive for the existing weather conditions. Drivers should also have safe distances between themselves and the car in front of them so they can stop without running into car in front. Recently, a car was traveling on a residential road at an unknown speed when the driver was unable to stop in time and instead struck…

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Friday July 20, 2012

Golden Hill Avenue in Haverhill, Massachusetts, as seen from satellite images, looks like a typical tree-lined road that winds its way through a suburban neighborhood. The speed limit is reported to be 30 miles per hour. A car was travelling on that road, perhaps at the speed limit, when a young boy on his bike exited off Moody Street, to proceed onto Golden Hill Avenue. The 13-year-old boy suffered serious head injuries when his bike struck a car being driven by a woman described as being in her late 30s. The bicycle and car accident took place at about 3:00 in the…

4th of July: Let’s be careful out there

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Monday July 2, 2012

The Fourth of July this year falls on a Wednesday. That is both good and bad news for holiday travelers. The good news is that it spreads the holiday traffic over more days of the week and potentially decreases traffic jams. The bad news is that those without paid vacation days will have one day off in the middle of the week with work days on either side. AAA has released some likely traffic numbers which are good reminders that we can use to reduce the likelihood of motor vehicle accidents in Massachusetts and elsewhere around the country. According to reliable sources,…

NHTSA Proposes Requiring Brake Override Systems on New Cars

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Monday June 25, 2012

Spurred on by safety advocates, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has recently proposed regulations that would require automobile manufacturers to require brake override systems in all new vehicles. The new proposal is partially in response to a car accident in which four people were tragically killed when an off-duty California Highway patrolman could not stop a Lexus that he borrowed. The reason: the accelerator pad got stuck because of the floor mat. This incident resulted in a recall of Toyota vehicles in 2009. The proposed regulation would require automobile manufacturers to include a brake-throttle override system in all…

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Friday June 15, 2012

More and more often, in all areas of the country, bicyclists are sharing the road with cars and trucks. Massachusetts is no exception. Recently, a pickup truck and a bicyclist were involved in an accident with injuries near the intersection of Falmouth Heights and Alma, in Falmouth, Massachusetts. The 18-year-old cyclist was injured and the truck driver was not. According to news sources, the accident took place at about 7 p.m. so daylight visibility should not have been a factor. The bicyclist and the truck were both traveling in the same direction on the same side of the street, as the rules…

Study: Marijuana Use Doubles Crash Risk

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Thursday May 24, 2012

A recent study from the British Medical Journal highlights the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs. According to the research, people driving within three hours of smoking marijuana had almost twice the risk of being involved in a serious car accident as sober drivers. Researchers at Canada's Dalhousie University reviewed nine previously published papers documenting accidents of 49,000 people involved in accidents involving cars, trucks, buses and motorcycles. The study focused on the accidents involving marijuana use. Marijuana use was confirmed by blood tests or was admitted by the driver after the accident had taken place. In addition to finding…

A rare happy ending after Chelsea truck crash

On behalf of posted in car accidents on Saturday May 19, 2012

If you see a headline reading "Rollover Truck Accident," you may not think it possible for the story to have a happy ending. And yet, oddly, that happened for a man who was driving a pickup truck involved in a rollover crash. According to news sources, a Boston car accident that caused the pickup truck rollover, occurred as a man was speeding away from police. The pickup driver was struck by a Ford Mustang driven by the 43-year-old man who was fleeing. Apparently, the Boson police were attempting to stop the 43-year-old for a minor traffic violation, when the driver sped off.…
